Mini Cooper Model Codes Explained (2026 Updated Guide): From R50 to J01 Electric

We still get the same question every day: "I drive a Mini Cooper, but I have no idea which model code it is." When you are ordering a custom bling emblem or center console cover, guessing the wrong generation means a decal that overlaps, gaps, or simply does not fit.

The original version of this guide was published in 2021. A lot has changed since then. Mini has launched an all-electric platform, retired the old Countryman, and introduced new body styles that did not exist three years ago. This 2026 update covers every Mini model code currently on the road—from the classic first-gen R50 to the brand-new electric J01 and J02 Aceman.

How to Read a Mini Model Code

Mini uses an internal BMW project code for each body style. The letter tells you the platform era; the numbers tell you the body type.

• R series (2001–2016): First and second generation under BMW. Built on modified British platforms.
• F series (2014–present): Third generation. Built on BMW UKL2 front-wheel-drive platform. Still in production for combustion models.
• U series (2024–present): New crossover platform. Only the U25 Countryman so far.
• J series (2024–present): All-electric platform. Shared with BMW iX1 architecture. The future of Mini.

Quick rule of thumb: if your Mini was built before 2014, it is an R. If it is a gas-powered Mini built after 2014, it is an F or U. If it is electric and built after 2024, it is a J.

1st Generation Mini (R50 / R52 / R53) — 2001–2006

The car that restarted the Mini legend. Small, light, and unmistakably retro. If you own one of these classics, you are part of the original cult following.

• R50: Mini One and Mini Cooper Hatchback (2001–2006). The base model with the least powerful engines.
• R52: First-generation Convertible (2005–2008). The soft-top version of the R50/R53.
• R53: Mini Cooper S Hatchback (2002–2006). Supercharged, sportier, and the one everyone wanted. The hood scoop and wider grille make the front emblem slightly different from the R50.

Bling note: R50 and R53 share the same front grille emblem size, but the S model's hood scoop can affect how light hits a rhinestone decal. Steering wheel emblems on R50/R52/R53 are smaller than later generations—do not try to force an F56 emblem onto a 2004 R53 wheel.

2nd Generation Mini (R55–R61) — 2007–2016

Mini expanded hard in this era. Hatchbacks, wagons, convertibles, coupes, roadsters, crossovers, and even a coupe-SUV thing called the Paceman. If you are confused by this generation, you are not alone.

• R55: Clubman (2008–2014). The asymmetrical-door wagon. Front grille emblem is wider than the hatchback. Clubman bling emblems are not interchangeable with R56 hatchback emblems.
• R56: Hatchback / Cooper S Hatchback (2007–2013). The most common second-gen Mini. Steering wheel logo is a 45mm circle with a flat bottom—smaller than the F56 that replaced it.
• R57: Convertible (2009–2015). Soft-top version of the R56. Shares the same front and steering wheel emblems.
• R58: Coupe (2012–2015). The weird roofline one. Only two seats. Front emblem matches R56.
• R59: Roadster (2012–2015). Convertible version of the R58. Same front emblem as R56/R58.
• R60: Countryman (2010–2016). First Mini SUV. Much larger front grille emblem. The R60 steering wheel is thicker and the emblem bezel is wider than any hatchback.
• R61: Paceman (2013–2016). The two-door coupe version of the R60 Countryman. Same front and wheel emblems as R60.

Bling note: R56 and R60 are the two most common second-gen models we see. The R56 steering wheel emblem is roughly 45mm; the R60 is roughly 55mm. If you order the wrong size, the decal will either float in the recess or overhang the edges. Always measure before ordering.

3rd Generation Combustion Mini (F54–F67 / U25) — 2014–Present

This is the current generation for gas-powered Minis. The F56 hatchback is the global bestseller, but the lineup has grown to include a five-door, a new convertible, and a completely redesigned Countryman on a separate platform.

• F54: Clubman (2015–2024). The second-generation wagon. Six doors now, not the asymmetrical R55 layout. Wider front grille than the hatchback. Production ended in 2024; no direct replacement yet.
• F55: 5-Door Hatchback (2014–present). The practical Mini. Same front grille as the F56, but the steering wheel and interior trim are identical.
• F56: 3-Door Hatchback (2014–2024). The icon. The most popular Mini ever for bling upgrades. The 2021 LCI facelift changed the front grille pattern but kept the emblem size the same. In 2024, the F56 was replaced by the F66 in most markets.
• F57: Convertible (2016–2024). Soft-top F56. Same emblems. Replaced by the F65 in 2024.
• F60: Countryman (2017–2024). Second-gen SUV. Larger front emblem than the hatchback, but smaller than the new U25. The F60 steering wheel has a thicker bezel that can interfere with poorly sized bling decals.
• F65: Convertible (2024–present). The new soft-top replacing the F57. Built on the updated F66 platform. Front and steering wheel emblems match the F66.
• F66: 3-Door Hatchback (2024–present). The successor to the F56. Slightly redesigned front end, but the emblem dimensions are identical to the F56. If you have a 2024 or 2025 3-door hatch, you likely have an F66.
• F67: 5-Door Hatchback (2024–present). The successor to the F55. Same emblem sizes as the F66.
• U25: Countryman (2024–present). The all-new third-generation Countryman. Built on a BMW X1/X2 platform. Much larger and more upright than the F60. The front grille emblem is significantly bigger—<an F60 bling decal will not fit a U25.

Bling note: For 2024–2026 buyers, the most common question is "F56 or F66?" The good news: they share the same 3-door hatchback emblem sizes. If you own a 2024+ 3-door, an F56-rated bling emblem will fit your F66. The U25 Countryman, however, is a completely different animal. Measure the front grille emblem before ordering; it is roughly 15% larger than the F60.

Electric Mini (J01 / J02) — 2024–Present

This is the biggest change in Mini history. The J platform is all-electric, built in China and Germany, and shares BMW's latest EV architecture. If you are buying a new Mini in 2025 or 2026, there is a good chance you are looking at a J.

• J01: Mini Cooper Electric SE (2024–present). The electric 3-door hatch. It looks like a futuristic F56, but the front grille is closed off for aerodynamics. The Mini wing badge is still there, but it sits on a flat, smooth panel instead of an open grille. The steering wheel emblem is slightly smaller than the F56—roughly 42mm versus 48mm.
• J02: Mini Aceman (2024–present). The brand-new electric crossover. Smaller than the Countryman, larger than the hatch. Think of it as the electric successor to the Paceman. The front emblem is unique to the Aceman—wider and more rectangular than the round hatchback badge. The steering wheel is a new two-spoke design with a smaller emblem recess.

Bling note: J01 and J02 emblems are not compatible with any F-series bling decals. The shapes, sizes, and mounting surfaces are different. How to Measure Your Emblem for a Perfect Bling Fit

Even with the right model code, manufacturing tolerances can vary by a few millimeters between model years. The only way to guarantee a 100% fit is to measure.

For Front Grille Emblems

1. Place a ruler or measuring tape horizontally across the widest part of your stock emblem.
2. Record the width in millimeters.
3. Place the ruler vertically and record the height.
4. Take a photo with the ruler still in place and send it to us.

For Steering Wheel Emblems

1. Turn the wheel so the logo is facing straight up.
2. Measure the diameter of the circular emblem recess, not the outer plastic ring.
3. On J-series electric Minis, measure the flat oval badge area instead of a circle.
4. Photo + measurement = zero guesswork.
